Ronald McDonald House honors two Emerging America teacher-leaders

Easthampton High School history teacher Kelley Brown and Fourth and Fifth grade Hilltown Cooperative Charter Public School teacher Laurie Risler were honored by the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Connecticut and Western Massachusetts for their dedication to the profession of teaching and their outstanding efforts in servicing their schools and communities. The charity has awarded a $1000 grant to the schools in which these "Local Heroes" teach. Both recipients remarked that the awards represent something special about the schools in which they teach and that their goals include creating communities in which all students are accepted and can achieve success. Kelley Brown has been working with the Teaching American History program as a teacher-leader for the past six years, in addition to working with the Collaborative's Division of Youth Services teachers as a professional development facilitator. Laurie Risler participated in Emerging America programs for several years before joining the program as a teacher-leader last summer. In addition to leading Teaching American History programs, Kelley and Laurie are both presenters from the Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) program at the Collaborative, supported with a grant from the Library of Congress. Congratulations to Kelley and Laurie for this well-deserved recognition!

Rich Cairn founded Emerging America in 2006, which features the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources program at the Collaborative for Educational Services, and the National Endowment for the Humanities Landmarks of American History program, "Forge of Innovation: The Springfield Armory and the Genesis of American Industry." The Accessing Inquiry clearinghouse, supported by the Library of Congress TPS program promotes full inclusion of students with disabilities and English Learners in civics and social studies education.
